Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to make informed decisions in both known and changing situations and to apply dynamic decision making in complex, high consequence situations where time is of the essence. It includes employing data analytics to inform decision making in a variety of situations. and undertaking dynamic decision making.The unit applies to those who make considered decisions under normal circumstances but are also required at times to undertake critical thinking and rapid decision making. Dynamic decisions refer to those made in difficult and high-pressure situations characterised by real-time constraints and changing circumstances.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Make informed decisions
  • 1.1 Gather and verify different types of data from multiple sources to provide a system level view of situations and problems requiring decisions
  • 1.2 Identify changing circumstances that influence decisions and planning
  • 1.3 Use decision-making tools to assist in critical analysis and assimilation of new information and enable safe and timely decisions to be made
  • 1.4 Develop workable solutions, assess associated risks, and determine best option in accordance with organisational procedures and level of own responsibility
  • 1.5 Actively consult with stakeholders when making important decisions that impact their responsibilities and the organisation’s value chain
  • 1.6 Implement timely decisions to meet operational deadlines, and monitor impacts of implementation to confirm desired outcome is achieved or adjust as needed in response to changing circumstances
2. Employ data analytics
  • 2.1 Compile data sources and use analytics to inform decision-making in real time
  • 2.2 Identify correlation and causation in data patterns and relationships
  • 2.3 Use predictive analytics for forecasting or anticipating issues and events
  • 2.4 Interpret trends and patterns in real-time data to determine future actions
  • 2.5 Check quantitative data to confirm it is within normal limits to increase confidence in decisions and to eliminate false positives
3. Undertake dynamic decision making
  • 3.1 Assess each situation within required timeframe, note the most relevant features, and note reasons for unexpected or unusual features and events
  • 3.2 Address situations within scope of own role or escalate when level of own responsibility, area of expertise or potential consequences demand escalation according to organisational processes
  • 3.3 Adhere to organisational protocols and procedures outlining safe work practices to support clear decision making in difficult and high-pressure situations
  • 3.4 Evaluate common methods for addressing similar situations, based on previous experience or training, or by mentally simulating options and their consequences
  • 3.5 Make decisions based on current available information and communicate them clearly for swift deployment with a focus on achieving desired outcomes within a specific timeframe
  • 3.6 Monitor implementation to confirm the effects and outcomes within desired timeframe and take further action in response to changing circumstances
  • 3.7 Log or report situation, response, outcomes, and any modifications made, in line with organisational procedures
