Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to conduct a quick assessment of disease outbreak as a member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).It includes initiating data gathering and analysing epidemiologic data from quick assessment. It also includes reporting assessment findings and implementing disease control measures.This unit applies to personnel working in ADF preventive medicine.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Persons undertaking this unit work independently and perform complex tasks in a range of familiar contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Initiate data gathering for quick assessment
- 1.1 Liaise with stakeholders to gain consent for quick assessment to occur, in accordance with operational policies
- 1.2 Determine factors affecting complexity of quick assessment
- 1.3 Obtain information on life cycle of disease outbreak using appropriate data collection methods in accordance with operational procedures
- 1.4 Task and provide guidance to persons assisting with quick assessment to enable them to assist independently
- 1.5 Conduct environmental measurements and testing to support quick assessment
2 Analyse epidemiologic data
- 2.1 Construct a chronology of events to identify initial causative incident
- 2.2 Analyse causative incident/s to identify nature of disease causing outbreak, in accordance with operational procedures
- 2.3 Analyse epidemiologic data to identify disease spread and to classify disease outbreak proportions
- 2.4 Compare factors relating to disease outbreak to treatment information and organisation’s response to the disease outbreak in accordance with operational procedures
- 2.5 Contact relevant specialist authorities to seek expert advice to aid with assessment of disease, as required
3 Report assessment findings and implement disease control measures
- 3.1 Gain relevant stakeholder approval for assessment findings
- 3.2 Identify relevant control measures that specifically address factors relating to disease outbreak in accordance with operational procedures
- 3.3 Record and communicate assessment findings and control measures with relevant stakeholders
- 3.4 Conduct a control measure lesson learned activity to support wider environmental health support plan
