Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lay pipes in civil construction, including setting out and conducting excavation, preparing foundations, installing bedding and laying pipe. It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to lay pipes
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to lay pipes
- 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures within scope of own role
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
- 1.5 Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage requirements
- 1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment required to carry out tasks and check for faults
- 1.7 Survey work area for loading and unloading and stockpiling materials
2. Set out excavation
- 2.1 Determine location and depth of excavation according to job requirements
- 2.2 Set out and mark excavation location according to job requirements
- 2.3 Advise plant operator of excavation requirements
- 2.4 Check excavation depths and grades against job requirements
- 2.5 Compact and prepare foundation base for testing
3. Install bedding materials
- 3.1 Determine bedding material type and specification according to job plans and drawings
- 3.2 Lay and compact bedding materials to specified depths and grades according to job requirements
4. Lay pipe
- 4.1 Select, check and attach lifting apparatus to the pipe in preparation for lifting and installation for pipe joining
- 4.2 Prepare and specify pipe ends according to job requirements
- 4.3 Align pipe ends and push home
- 4.4 Check pipe for line and level
- 4.5 Advise plant operator of backfilling requirements and backfill and compact pipe to finish level according to job requirements
- 4.6 Finish inlets and outlets according to pipe or culvert design specifications
5. Conduct clean-up activities
- 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to site requirements
- 5.2 Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment according to site requirements
