Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to manage the planning of forest coupe establishment, harvesting and regeneration.The unit applies to job roles including Arboriculture Manager, Forest Manager, Forestry Manager, Harvesting Manager, Nursery Manager, Plantation Establishment Manager, Plantation Manager and Production Manager.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.There may be Codes of Practice applicable to coupe planning in some areas and for some forest types.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan coupe establishment
  • 1.1 Establish local authority coverage, land ownership and boundaries.
  • 1.2 Check coupe location including map and grid references.
  • 1.3 Identify and apply for land use zoning and planning permits.
2. Plan coupe harvesting
  • 2.1 Analyse forest type, available species and topography and document in line site procedures.
  • 2.2 Calculate gross area of coupe and net area to be harvested.
  • 2.3 Calculate and report volume estimates.
  • 2.4 Plan operational activities including site preparation, environmental considerations and access.
  • 2.5 Issue tenders and award harvesting and cartage contracts and establish cartage routes.
  • 2.6 Develop, check and communicate schedule for harvesting.
3. Plan coupe regeneration
  • 3.1 Select regeneration method best suited to the site conditions
  • 3.2 Plan and instigate environmental protection measures for the landscape, soil and drainage.
  • 3.3 Create and schedule seeding process or seedling planting regime
  • 3.4 Plan and schedule silviculture systems.
  • 3.5 Record and report management of coupe planning to appropriate personnel.
