Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to move and handle pigs.This unit applies to workers in pork production who undertake routine pig handling tasks under supervision. Work environments may include indoor and outdoor pork production systems.Commonwealth and/or state/territory health and safety, animal welfare, environmental protection and biosecurity legislation, regulations and codes of practice apply to keeping and working with pigs. Requirements vary between jurisdictions.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. Mandatory workplace requirements apply to the assessment of this unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for movement of pigs
  • 1.1 Identify and follow biosecurity procedures that apply to entering and working on a pork production site
  • 1.2 Confirm pigs to be moved, their current location, their destination and timing of the move
  • 1.3 Confirm enterprise animal welfare and biosecurity requirements for pig movement
  • 1.4 Identify health and safety hazards, assess risks and control and/or report risks prior to commencing tasks
  • 1.5 Select, prepare and fit appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the tasks and conditions
  • 1.6 Check gates and/or pathways/routes for clear access, and readiness of destination to receive pigs
  • 1.7 Advise other workers of upcoming pig movement as required
2. Move pigs
  • 2.1 Determine pigs to be moved individually and/or in groups
  • 2.2 Handle, move and/or lift pigs using safe manual handling techniques, and low stress animal handling techniques
  • 2.3 Monitor pig behaviour during all handling and moving activities, and identify and respond to situations and hazards that arise to avoid or minimise injury to self, others and pigs
  • 2.4 Report and seek assistance from supervisor for incidents and/or risks beyond level of own responsibility
3. Complete movement of pigs
  • 3.1 Check pigs are safely and securely housed or enclosed at destination
  • 3.2 Reset gates and raceways as required
  • 3.3 Clean and store equipment used to handle and move pigs as required
  • 3.4 Complete pig movement records, and report incidents according to enterprise procedures
