General context
Work must be carried out in compliance with relevant maritime regulations.
Work is performed to established procedures under broad operational requirements within the limits of responsibility of an Engineer (Class 3).
Work involves the application of marine engineering practice to the fabrication of simple shipboard components. Accountability and responsibility for self and others in achieving the outcomes is involved.
Work requires skill to carry out basic engineering fabrication functions. This includes interpretation of specifications and the planning, implementation and checking of fabrication processes.
Worksite environment
Components to be fabricated may include simple components involving processes falling within the limits of responsibility of an Engineer (Class 3) on commercial vessels of up to 3,000 kW propulsion power operating within offshore limits.
Fabrication tasks may be carried out:
by day or night in both normal and emergency situations
under any conditions of weather
while underway
while anchored or moored
in dry dock
when bunkering
during cargo operations.
Fabrication tasks are dependent on the type and size of vessel involved and may include:
selection of appropriate materials
use of hand and power tools
marking out and cutting of materials
bending and folding of materials
basic machining (where relevant)
basic welding
basic heat treatment
checking and quality assurance.
Fabrication tools and equipment may include:
hand and power tools
measurement and marking out tools
cutting, bending and folding tools
machine tools
basic welding equipment
lifting gear and equipment
protective clothing and equipment such as:
eye and ear protection
safety boots and helmet
dust and fume masks
Fabrication hazards may include:
moving heavy loads using unsafe lifting procedures
welding equipment

flammable liquids, vapours and fuel
