Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, lay out, cut, join fasten, trim and finish installing carpet by 'direct sticking' the carpet straight to the subfloor and ‘dual bonding' the carpet and underlay to the subfloor. It includes the installation of adhesive-fixed carpet to non-complex stairs.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training.They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install adhesive-fixed carpet
  • 1.1 Interpret underlay and carpet installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
  • 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
  • 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Gather underlay, carpet, adhesives, trims and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to manufacturer instructions, product labels and safety data sheets
  • 1.5 Confirm the subfloor is clean and suitable for installing the carpet, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.6 Apply primer to the subfloor according to the manufacturer instructions
2. Lay carpet using the direct-stick method
  • 2.1 Determine the set out and laying direction of the carpet according to job instructions to minimise waste and joins, consider the direction of the pile, and ensure an efficient, quality installation
  • 2.2 Establish the skirting point and seam placements for the carpet
  • 2.3 Lay out carpet pieces and measure, mark and check them for size, direction of the pile, pattern and match
  • 2.4 Fold back the carpet and apply adhesive to the subfloor according to the manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • 2.5 Position, stretch and fasten the carpet into the adhesive, and seal and join the carpet pieces, according to the manufacturer instructions
  • 2.6 Trim off excess carpet, install finishing strips, and finish installing the carpet to meet quality requirements
  • 2.7 Check the carpet is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
3. Lay carpet using the dual-bond method
  • 3.1 Confirm the subfloor is clean and suitable for installing the carpet, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Apply primer to the subfloor according to the manufacturer instructions
  • 3.3 Establish the skirting point and seam placements for the underlay
  • 3.4 Lay out and trim the underlay according to job instructions
  • 3.5 Fold back the underlay and apply adhesive to the subfloor according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • 3.6 Position and fasten the underlay into the adhesive and trim the underlay according to the manufacturer instructions and job instructions
  • 3.7 Establish the skirting point and seam placements for the carpet
  • 3.8 Lay out the carpet pieces and measure, mark and check them for size, direction of the pile, pattern and match
  • 3.9 Fold back the carpet and apply adhesive to the underlay according to the manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • 3.10 Position, stretch and fasten the carpet into the adhesive, and seal and join the carpet pieces, according to the manufacturer instructions
  • 3.11 Trim off excess carpet, install finishing strips and finish installing the carpet to meet quality requirements
  • 3.12 Check the carpet is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
4. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
  • 4.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • 4.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
  • 4.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
  • 4.4 Complete task outcome documentation
