This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to evaluate and select construction materials for buildings in accordance with specific requirements for access. It includes evaluating the performance of a range of building materials and selecting suitable materials based on structure, fire resistance, cost and application.This unit is for individuals who are self-directed and have substantial depth of knowledge and skills to make independent judgements in the provision of access consulting services.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Evaluate performance of building materials.
  • 1.1 Interpret relevant documentation to evaluate properties of materials based on performance.
  • 1.2 Identify quality standards and material performance requirements for access compliance.
  • 1.3 Review product data sheets to evaluate and record methods of testing materials.
  • 1.4 Identify and record visual characteristics of materials.
  • 1.5 Evaluate and document compatibility and performance of building materials for access compliance.
2 Select suitable materials for building.
  • 2.1 Interpret plans, working drawings and specifications for building project to determine specific access requirements.
  • 2.2 Identify and select samples of commonly used construction materials to investigate suitability according to their purpose and access requirements.
  • 2.3 Select materials identified as structurally adequate, having the required fire resistance, and suitable for given applications according to specific access requirements.
  • 2.4 Conduct required calculations to select materials considered cost effective according to client and workplace requirements.
  • 2.5 Finalise material selection to meet access, regulatory and workplace requirements.
