Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install signs in civil construction, including loading, transporting, unloading and installing free standing signs, including those requiring installation of dual supports.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to install signs
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to install signs
- 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures within scope of role
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
- 1.5 Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage requirements
- 1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment required to carry out tasks and check for faults
- 1.7 Clarify and confirm permits and clearances according to regulatory requirements
2. Transport sign and materials to site
- 2.1 Survey site location according to job drawings and specifications
- 2.2 Arrange site access according to site requirements
- 2.3 Prepare delivery site for risk control according to site requirements
- 2.4 Determine availability of loading and unloading equipment
- 2.5 Arrange signage transportation according to job requirements
- 2.6 Protect and secure signs for transportation
- 2.7 Load, transport and off-load signs and equipment according to job requirements
3. Assemble sign
- 3.1 Lay out and check sign components against job requirements
- 3.2 Check and confirm signage against job requirements
- 3.3 Assemble sign on or off site according to job and site requirements
4. Erect sign
- 4.1 Determine erection method according to job requirements
- 4.2 Prepare support materials according to drawings and specifications
- 4.3 Install fastenings according to manufacturer specifications
- 4.4 Brace support structure according to job requirements
- 4.5 Erect sign according to job requirements
5. Conduct clean-up activities
