This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to install signs in Civil Construction.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for installing signs
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply sign installation documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage requirements
  • 1.6 Select and check for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • 1.7 Clarify and confirm permits and clearances in accordance with regulatory authority requirements
2. Transport sign and materials to the site
  • 2.1 Survey location of the site in accordance with job drawings and specifications
  • 2.2 Arrange site access in accordance with safe working procedures
  • 2.3 Prepare delivery site for risk control
  • 2.4 Determine availability of loading/unloading equipment
  • 2.5 Arrange transportation of signage
  • 2.6 Protect signs appropriately and pack them securely for transportation
  • 2.7 Load, transport and off-load signs and equipment correctly
3. Assemble sign
  • 3.1 Lay out and check sign components prior to assembly
  • 3.2 Confirm correct signage against specifications
  • 3.3 Assemble sign on or off site as appropriate
4. Erect sign
  • 4.1 Determine method of erection according to job requirements
  • 4.2 Prepare support materials according to drawings and specifications
  • 4.3 Install fastenings to manufacturer’s recommendations
  • 4.4 Brace support structure safely
  • 4.5 Erect sign efficiently and safely
5. Clean up
  • 5.1 Clear work area and recycle or dispose of materials
  • 5.2 Clean, check, maintain and store plant and equipment
