Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to establish an understanding of human anatomy and physiology, diseases and conditions and surgical procedures and interventions in order to interpret clinical documentation.This unit applies to health care professionals who are responsible for interpreting and extracting patient clinical information for the purposes of providing health care services. Work may be performed as an individual or as part of a team under limited supervision.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify the structure and function of the human body and the effect of diseases and conditions.
  • 1.1. Identify the key anatomical structures of the human body system and their component parts.
  • 1.2. Recognise normal body functions that maintain homeostasis.
  • 1.3. Identify common diseases and conditions affecting the human body system and differentiate signs and symptoms from pathological conditions for each system.
  • 1.4. Use knowledge of anatomy and physiology to determine disease progression.
2. Identify the appropriate investigation and treatment for diseases and conditions.
  • 2.1. Identify methods used to diagnose diseases and conditions.
  • 2.2. Identify common surgical procedures or interventions used to treat diseases and conditions.
  • 2.3. Locate required drug information including dosage, administration routes and indication for use using the relevant drug reference material, in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
3. Apply and maintain knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • 3.1. Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to analyse episodes of care.
  • 3.2. Identify and use opportunities to update and expand own knowledge of anatomy and physiology, the disease process and clinical interventions.
  • 3.3. Use medical references to interpret clinical information.
