Description

General

To provide specialised interpreting training at a standard compatible with
NAATI Level 2 requirements.

To provide the opportunity for accreditation, by
NAATI, at Level 2, on successful completion of the
TAFE course and NAATI tests (which are held annually
at the end of the course in November).

Specific

To train the students to work within the ethnic community, in areas such as
housing, banking and finance, transport, customs, travel, industry, union
matters, social welfare, migrant settlement, hospital and medical services,
education and, to a lesser extent, in legal matters, which are more
specifically the province of the Level 3 Interpreter.

To refine the students' knowledge of the structure
and syntax of English and the LOTE, so that they
can, in this framework, use the specialised
vocabulary idioms, etc., effectively, in the
interpreting situation in either language.

To give the students an understanding of the history
of migration in Australia, and the cultures of
Australia and the target country, in this context
(NOT ADSL).

To develop the practical skills of interpreting, and
to provide maximum opportunities for students to
train in practical and realistic settings, e.g.
fieldwork in an interpreting agency, and weekly
simulated dialogue-interpreting, with actual
representatives from specific fields, e.g. social
welfare.

To enable the students to gain an understanding, and experience, of the
principles, underlying communication and interpersonal skills, and the
importance of non-verbal factors, especially when under stress, or in difficult
interpreting situations.

To provide students with training in the practical
and theoretical aspects of professional interpreting
ethics, and to foster the development of
professional values and attitudes.

To provide students with theoretical and practical
skills in oral and written translation, from English
to/from target language.

To help students gain an understanding of the
various social agencies operating within the
community, and how to make use of them in the
interpreting context.

Special Note

A TAFE Certificate of Interpreting (Level 2), will
be awarded on successful completion of the course,
but a graduate of this course may not practise,
unless he/she has passed the final Interpreting
Practice examination, with a minimum of 70%, to
obtain NAATI accreditation.

Candidates who do not pass the NAATI Level 2 test at
the end of the TAFE course, may apply, subsequently,
to take the NAATI test, independently of the course.
