This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply relevant legislation, codes of practice and workplace procedures in a manner that ensures the health and safety of self and others.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who carry out a range of daily tasks that involve some level of risk, identify and manage that risk and collaborate with colleagues to promote a safe working environment.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Maintain personal safety when carrying out work tasks
  • 1.1 Keep own work area clean and tidy
  • 1.2 Implement workplace security measures
  • 1.3 Implement workplace manual handling procedures
  • 1.4 Implement workplace infection control procedures
  • 1.5 Implement workplace hazard identification and risk control procedures
  • 1.6 Follow manufacturer’s instructions for the safe use and storage of hazardous products
2 Utilise strategies to prevent stress overload
  • 2.1 Maintain responsibilities and boundaries of own work role
  • 2.2 Adhere to nominated rest times and breaks
  • 2.3 Identify sources of stress and raise these with workplace supervisor
  • 2.4 Implement strategies to reduce stress in the workplace
3 Collaborate with others about workplace health and safety
  • 3.1 Accurately complete and store workplace documentation for hazard identification and risk control
  • 3.2 Inform colleagues of identified hazards and risk control strategies according to workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Discuss workplace health and safety issues with colleagues in order to develop solutions
