Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to support ethical practices and maintain professional conduct within legislative and compliance requirements.

This unit of competency is applied by educators who complete tasks within the parameters of their job role, workplace policies and procedures and legal and ethical frameworks. They use these frameworks to guide decisions about workplace practice including responses to ethical dilemmas and breaches of compliance requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Identify and apply the legal compliance requirements of the work role
  • 1.1 Investigate international, national and local drivers of legal compliance and how they influence workplace practices
  • 1.2 Implement the legal compliance requirements of the work role by adhering to workplace policies and procedures
  • 1.3 Report breaches of legal compliance requirements in accordance with workplace procedure
2 Plan, organise and manage own workload
  • 2.1 Operate within the responsibilities and boundaries of own work role
  • 2.2 Plan and complete tasks within agreed time frames and schedules
  • 2.3 Clarify understanding of tasks with supervisor
  • 2.4 Adjust priorities if resources are not available or if time frames are unable to be met
  • 2.5 Implement workplace procedures for tracking progress and recording completion of tasks
3 Work with an ethical approach
  • 3.1 Identify the ethical responsibilities articulated in the profession’s code of ethics
  • 3.2 Investigate how these responsibilities are demonstrated in own workplace practices
  • 3.3 Fulfil ethical responsibilities to colleagues and families during interactions
  • 3.4 Implement work practices that are in the best interests of children
4 Apply ethical decision making when responding to an ethical dilemma
  • 4.1 Gather factual information about an identified ethical dilemma in the workplace
  • 4.2 Identify the competing values and perspectives of each party impacted by the dilemma
  • 4.3 Refer to a code of ethics to guide proposed responses to the dilemma
  • 4.4 Select and implement a response after discussing proposals with a colleague or supervisor
  • 4.5 Use reflection to determine the effectiveness of the response for each party and identify changes for future responses
