Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to implement hygiene practices that maintain the health of children.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who prepare and serve food, maintain the cleanliness of physical environments, including the disposal of waste, and identify and support children who are unwell. They also teach personal hygiene practices to children to support their health.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Implement food hygiene practices
  • 1.1 Wash hands with soap before preparing and serving food
  • 1.2 Wear personal protective equipment according to food safety guidelines
  • 1.3 Separate raw and cooked food and use separate equipment and utensils for each
  • 1.4 Provide individual utensils for each child to reduce cross infection
  • 1.5 Store and serve food at the correct temperature according to food safety guidelines
  • 1.6 Clean food preparation area and utensils after use
2 Provide healthy and hygienic settings
  • 2.1 Clean the physical environment in accordance with infection control practices and workplace procedure
  • 2.2 Store cleaning products in a location that is inaccessible to children
  • 2.3 Provide clean spaces and equipment for children’s play
  • 2.4 Dispose of waste and body fluids in accordance with infection control practices and workplace procedures
  • 2.5 Implement strategies to control vermin
  • 2.6 Provide ventilation so children can access fresh air
  • 2.7 Keep animals away from food preparation, storage and serving areas
3 Promote children’s personal hygiene practices
  • 3.1 Explain and role model to children how and when to wash and dry their hands to reduce the spread of infection
  • 3.2 Explain and role model to children how to blow their nose, cough and sneeze in a way that reduces the spread of infection
  • 3.3 Explain to children how to wipe themselves hygienically after using the toilet
  • 3.4 Encourage children to practise personal hygiene skills during routines
  • 3.5 Provide sufficient time, materials and equipment for children to practise and develop their skills
  • 3.6 Provide assistance according to the child’s needs while maintaining their dignity
  • 3.7 Incorporate children and family’s individual preferences and needs in a hygienic manner
4 Support children who are unwell
  • 4.1 Identify signs and symptoms of illness in children
