Description
To enable students to communicate, both orally and in
writing, in Spanish on a survival level in first
encounter situations, and to read simple texts.
To teach students the basic Spanish grammatical
structures necessary to perform the tasks stipulated
throughout this unit.

Internal Assessment 100%
Assessment is based on the listed objectives. Oral
examinations should be taped. Students must achieve at
least 50% of EACH of the three assessment
components.
40% Aural/Oral Examination (10-15 mins), internally assessed
40% Written Examination (1 hour), internally assessed
20% Lecturer's continuous assessment based on listed
objectives as performed in class.
Criteria for Assessment
Successful communication is the focus of all assessment.
In assessing the communicative skills of the student,
the following criteria (subject to language-specific
needs) may assist in determining the level of student
performances:
- Appropriateness of responses
- Pronunciation/intonation/tones
- Language structure (i.e. syntax, word-order)
- Fluency (ease of use, hesitations, repetitions)
Internal Examination Requirements
Aural/Oral Examination 40%
Short, personal conversation between teacher and
student. (20%)
Short, simple role-play based on the listed tasks, or
information-gap exercise. (10%)
Several short aural comprehension passages based on the
listed tasks. (10%)
Written Examination 40%
Transfer of details from a short, descriptive passage to
a form/plan/diagram. (10%)
Writing of a shopping list/timetable, menu/price-list
for a given situation. (10%)
Extract information from simple (if possible, authentic)
documents, such as passports, forms, menus, maps,
timetables, notices, advertisements. (10%)
Write a short description from information given on
pictures, plans, diagrams, maps. (10%)
General Criteria for Assigning Grades
A = shows mastery of the language areas and
skills specified in the syllabus.
Makes only a few errors.
B = shows some mastery of the language
areas and skills specified in the
syllabus. Errors pose no real interference. C = shows the
ability to communicate within the specified areas. Errors are frequent but do
not affect overall communication. Often requires help. Understands most
questions. F = Frequency of errors hinders effective
communication. Does not understand questions. G = Does not
understand questions, cannot respond.
