Description
This qualification reflects the role of entry-level technicians who work under supervision to assist a surveying or spatial information services team.
Surveying and spatial information skills are applied in a range of industry contexts, including town planning, civil construction, mining, engineering, health, agriculture and defence.
Survey technicians perform a range of duties using surveying tools and equipment, including total stations and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), supported by data management skills.
Spatial information services technicians perform a range of duties using geospatial technologies and specialised software, supported by data management skills.
Cadastral surveying must be undertaken under the supervision of a registered surveyor. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.
This qualification is suitable for an Australian traineeship pathway.

Packaging Rules
To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in fifteen (15) units of competency consisting of:
- Three (3) core units
- Twelve (12) elective units.
For a specialisation in surveying, electives are to be selected as follows:
- a minimum of six (6) units from Group A
- an additional six (6) units from Group A, Group B and/or Group C
or
- up to two (2) of the six (6) elective units from Group A, Group B and/or Group C may be selected from any current training package or accredited course provided they contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome, maintain the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level of this qualification and do not duplicate the outcome of another unit used to achieve the qualification.
