Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to align canter rings and chipper heads for wood chipping equipment, which are used for both primary and secondary processing of solid wood products. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting.The unit applies to Sawdoctor, Saw Repairer, Sawyer. No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for aligning
- 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
- 1.2 Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
- 1.3 Plan alignment process in line with work order.
2. Conduct shut down
- 2.1 Follow organisational safety procedures thoughout all maintenance and repair processes.
- 2.2 Remove, replace and temporarily store mechanical and safety components to provide access to alignment parts.
- 2.3 Remove, replace and temporarily locate guides.
- 2.4 Keep work area clear of dust, off-cuts and debris in line with organisational safety procedures.
3. Align rings and heads
- 3.1 Access and interpret equipment history records, and manufacturer's recommendations.
- 3.2 Remove canter rings and chipper heads to be aligned.
- 3.3 Assess performance of canter rings and chipper heads and re-align, according to manufacturer's instructions.
- 3.4 Check saw for alignment and free operation.
- 3.5 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.
