Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan the fabrication process, mark out and cut materials and fabricate textile products using methods such as sewing, welding or gluing. Textile products may be vehicle coverings, shade sails, awnings, marine canopies or blinds. They could be standard products or custom-made.This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with pre-determined specifications and established procedures. They use discretion and judgement to plan and select processes to meet work outcomes.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Set up and plan job sequence
- 1.1 Identify job requirements from work documentation
- 1.2 Identify and comply with work health and safety requirements
- 1.3 Plan task sequence and estimate time required to complete operations
- 1.4 Determine materials, hardware and attachments required and calculate required quantities
- 1.5 Determine and prepare appropriate workspace to conduct production process
- 1.6 Identify and set up required tooling and equipment in accordance with workplace procedures
2. Lay out and mark materials
- 2.1 Lay out material according to requirements and anchor to prevent movement using appropriate devices and safe work practices
- 2.2 Place required templates into correct positions
- 2.3 Mark out required shapes and features in accordance with specifications
- 2.4 Make allowances for seams, joins, reinforced edges and other design features
- 2.5 Plot and mark positions of openings, inserts, gussets, reinforcing, attachments and other components in accordance with specifications
3. Cut materials
- 3.1 Connect electric tools to power and use safely to cut materials and form shapes in accordance with specifications
- 3.2 Manipulate materials safely on cutting surface and separate product from waste material
- 3.3 Remove finished panels and fold with correct sequence of folds to suit further processing
- 3.4 Remove waste materials and separate for recycling or reuse in accordance with workplace procedures
- 3.5 Seek assistance to move finished products and waste material in accordance with safe manual handling requirements
4. Fabricate product
- 4.1 Select and operate equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
- 4.2 Use techniques to fabricate product based on specifications
- 4.3 Fit required attachments and accessories in accordance with specifications
- 4.4 Complete work systematically to achieve required detail and to minimise damage to goods and equipment
5. Check quality and finalise work
- 5.1 Inspect completed work, confirm that it meets the required standard and rectify any deficiencies
- 5.2 Label or tag completed products and complete production documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
- 5.3 Clean work area and perform routine equipment maintenance in accordance with workplace requirements and manufacturer specifications
