Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to construct corsetry and undergarments to give costumes a particular silhouette when worn by performers in screen, media and entertainment industry productions.It applies to individuals who work with minimal supervision and guidance to construct corsetry and undergarments for period and contemporary costumes. Even though they work to briefs from costume designers, there is scope for them to be creative as they work on designs they are given. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Construct patterns for costume corsets and undergarments
  • 1.1 Discuss and confirm corsetry and undergarment requirements with relevant personnel and with reference to production documentation and timelines
  • 1.2 Take body measurements required for pattern construction
  • 1.3 Calculate and record measurements required for construction according to enterprise procedures
  • 1.4 Use taken and calculated measurements to construct corset and undergarment patterns
  • 1.5 Test toiles for patterns and make adjustments to fit or proportioning
  • 1.6 Transfer adjustments to construction of patterns
  • 1.7 Make final patterns, write cutting instructions and label patterns
2. Lay up and cut corsets and undergarments
  • 2.1 Estimate meterage of fabric required in accordance with final patterns
  • 2.2 Lay fabric and place patterns according to cutting instructions
  • 2.3 Cut materials safely to meet pattern requirements
  • 2.4 Transfer notches and balance points from patterns to fabrics
3. Finalise corsets and undergarments
  • 3.1 Determine components required in consultation with relevant personnel
  • 3.2 Pin or sew fabric pieces and components using a systematic sequence of operations
  • 3.3 Fit corsets or undergarments during assembly and make adjustments and alterations to meet performers’ requirements and construction specifications
  • 3.4 Use appropriate techniques and equipment to safely sew fabric and component pieces together to form undergarments
  • 3.5 Label finished corsets and undergarments according to requirements
