Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to plan a mobile crane lift operation prior to positioning and setting up a mobile crane. It includes obtaining and confirming job instructions and work specifications, coordinating the loading of gear and equipment, assessing job requirements of work areas, designing operational plan and setting up work area. Work is performed with limited or minimum supervision.People achieving competence in this unit must hold the relevant high risk work licence prior to undertaking mobile crane operation, dogging or rigging work.Work must be carried out in compliance with the relevant state/territory authority mobile crane operations licence/permit requirements and regulations, codes of practice, rules and/or guidelines.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Confirm job instructions/work specifications prior to travelling to worksite
- 1.1 Job instructions are obtained and checked to ensure specifications include all necessary information
- 1.2 Operation plan, safe work method statement and other work specifications are interpreted and clarification is sought from relevant personnel
- 1.3 Permits are identified and interpreted in accordance with operation plan and workplace procedures
- 1.4 Engineering drawings are read and interpreted for site hazards including suspended slab, bearing ground pressure overhead and underground services
- 1.5 Utilities authority requirements are confirmed in accordance with operation plan and workplace procedures
- 1.6 Route access is confirmed in accordance with permit and operation plan
2 Coordinate loading of gear and equipment
- 2.1 Specific equipment for job is identified, selected and obtained in accordance with operation plan and workplace procedures
- 2.2 Equipment is properly packed and secured in accordance with workplace procedures to ensure injury and damage are avoided during transportation
3 Assess job requirements and work area
- 3.1 Site access and egress is followed in accordance with operation plan and workplace procedures
- 3.2 Hazards are identified and risks are eliminated or control measures selected and implemented in accordance with workplace procedures
- 3.3 Weight and dimensions of load are assessed and confirmed in consultation with relevant personnel to ensure job is within limits of crane capacity
- 3.4 Lift safety or feasibility concerns are discussed with relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures
- 3.5 Worksite area is inspected and lift parameters are confirmed with operation plan
- 3.6 Area is assessed to ensure there is sufficient space to cite the crane and conduct lift
- 3.7 Need to travel and/or traverse mobile crane is assessed and route to be travelled is planned
4 Confirm operational plan
- 4.1 Operational plan is confirmed to include hazard identification, risk elimination or control measures and safety procedures in accordance with applicable work health and safety (WHS)/ occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation, Australian Standards, codes of practice and equipment manufacturer specifications
- 4.2 Crane load chart for crane configuration is confirmed in accordance with operational plan and equipment manufacturer specifications
- 4.3 Job requirements, customer priorities, and workplace rules and procedures are taken into account in operation plan
- 4.4 Operational plan is discussed and confirmed with relevant personnel
- 4.5 Lift plan details are documented as required
