This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to support shot firing operations in Civil construction, Coal mining, Metalliferous mining (Surface), Drilling and Extractive.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.No licensing, legislation or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for supporting shot firing
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply blasting documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, confirm and apply shotfiring requirements, shift briefings, handover details and/or work orders before proceeding
  • 1.3 Access, interpret and apply environmental, geological, survey, and weather conditions data
  • 1.4 Identify, manage and report all potential hazards risks and environmental issues
  • 1.5 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate to the work activities
  • 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
  • 1.7 Resolve coordination requirements with others prior to commencing and during work activities
  • 1.8 Identify and test the explosives and accessories to be used
  • 1.9 Check blast holes
2 Provide support at the blast site
  • 2.1 Prepare and mix explosives
  • 2.2 Pick up, carry and transport explosives and accessories on the shot site
  • 2.3 Assist in securing and isolating blast area
  • 2.4 Prime, load, stem and tie in the explosive
  • 2.5 Carry out site clean-up operations
  • 2.6 Prepare and process reports and/or records of support activities as directed
