Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support shot firing operations in civil construction, coal mining (open cut), metalliferous mining (open cut), drilling and extractive sectors. It includes checking blast holes, handling explosives and accessories and priming, loading, stemming and tying explosives.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for supporting shotfiring
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm shotfiring requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply blasting documentation
  • 1.3 Access, interpret and apply environmental, geological, survey and weather conditions data within scope of own role according to site requirements
  • 1.4 Identify, manage and report potential hazards risks and environmental issues according to site requirements
  • 1.5 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
  • 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and confirm steps required to respond to emergencies
  • 1.7 Identify and test explosives and accessories to be used according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 1.8 Check blast holes according to site requirements
2. Provide support at blast site
  • 2.1 Transport explosives and accessories on shot site according to job and site requirements
  • 2.2 Assist in securing and isolating blast area according to site requirements
  • 2.3 Prime, load, stem and tie in explosives according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 2.4 Carry out site clean-up operations according to site requirements
  • 2.5 Complete reports and/or records according to site requirements
