Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to research, analyse and apply a range of approaches to interpreting based on the history, development and progress of relevant theories and their current application to work assignments and practice. The application of interpreting theory is an essential component of interpreting work assignments which require justification and critiquing of work undertaken.This unit applies to those working as interpreters in a range of professional settings.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify the role of the interpreter.
- 1.1. Analyse the cultural and political agenda of interpreting.
- 1.2. Analyse the historical and contemporary role and position of the interpreter.
- 1.3. Analyse the impact of emerging technologies and globalisation on interpreting.
2. Identify the principal issues influencing practice.
- 2.1. Analyse the concept of cross-lingual meaning transfer and its relevance to the practice of interpreting.
- 2.2. Identify the impact and use of theories on current interpreting practice.
- 2.3. Identify key issues in contemporary study and practice of interpreting.
3. Critique interpreting.
- 3.1. Analyse interpreting work assignments and identify the relevance and application of particular theories.
- 3.2. Classify and explain optional methods and approaches to interpreting assignments.
- 3.3. Analyse, critique and constructively report on approaches and on interpreting.
