Each unit of competency has an evidence guide that relates directly to the performance criteria and the range of variables. Its purpose is to guide assessment of the unit in the workplace and/or training program. The following components provide information to assist this purpose.

Underpinning knowledge
The essential knowledge and understanding a person needs to perform work to the required standard include:
· the effect of wind and current on the vessel when drifting and at anchor
· anchoring and mooring techniques appropriate to varying bottom types
· techniques that control the drift of a vessel.

Practical skills
The essential skills a person needs to perform work to the required standards include:
· vessel manoeuvring techniques
· ability to deploy anchoring equipment specific to a charter fishing operation
· handling traces when landing large species
· using gaffs or tagging equipment
· removing hooks from fish to be released.

Literacy skills used for:
· providing clear oral instructions to customers.

Critical aspects of competence
Assessment must confirm ability to:
· manoeuvre and position a vessel to conduct successful fishing and to land fish or tag and release fish as required.

Assessment must confirm knowledge of:
· effect of current and wind on hook and line position.

Interdependent assessment of units
This unit may be assessed with:
· SFIFISH304B - Adjust and position hand operated lines.

Context of assessment
Assessment is to be conducted at the workplace or in a simulated work environment.

Method of assessment
The following assessment methods are suggested:
· written or oral short answer testing
· practical exercises

· observation of practical demonstration.

Resources may include:
· operational charter fishing vessel and customers.
