Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan and supervise staging operations for productions in the live performance and events industries. Individuals who apply these skills are expected to display a high level of initiative, judgement and responsibility as they manage the operation of a wide range of staging equipment and effects, including high risk work associated with flying people and objects during performances.The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging and rigging work. Completion of the following units is required for certification at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels:CPCCLDG3001A Licence to perform doggingCPCCLRG3001A Licence to perform rigging basic levelCPCCLRG3002A Licence to perform rigging intermediate levelCPCCLRG4001A Licence to perform rigging advanced level.Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering a construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (Commonwealth of Australia, 2007).Achievement of the unit ‘CPCCOHS1001A Work safely in the construction industry’ fulfils this requirement.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan specialist staging operations
  • 1.1 Evaluate initial staging concepts and technical requirements in relation to feasibility, safety and environmental impact
  • 1.2 Provide timely and accurate advice on the feasibility and safety of concepts and their implementation, including suggestions for workable alternatives as required
  • 1.3 Document details of safety and technical requirements for specialist staging concepts
  • 1.4 Reach agreement on specialist staging concepts and final requirements in consultation with relevant personnel
  • 1.5 Develop contingency plans to minimise the impact of unexpected events on specialist staging operations
  • 1.6 Develop and document work plans for setting up, testing and operating specialist staging elements
2. Manage pre-show specialist staging operations
  • 2.1 Ensure that equipment and accessories are available and in safe working order
  • 2.2 Organise staging personnel in line with industry award guidelines, including the services of licensed riggers as required
  • 2.3 Contract the services of flying effects companies as required, ensuring that adequate time is allowed for installation, training and rehearsals with flying systems
  • 2.4 Collaborate with relevant personnel on modifications to sets to allow the safe flying of objects and people
  • 2.5 Monitor progress of pre-show staging operations against work plans and implement contingency plans as required to ensure that production deadlines are met
  • 2.6 Supervise staging aspects of technical and dress rehearsals and modify procedures as required
  • 2.7 Treat colleagues with consideration and respect to develop and maintain effective work relationships
  • 2.8 Develop and maintain production documentation as required
3. Manage show and post-show specialist staging operations
  • 3.1 Monitor staging operations during performances and take appropriate action to resolve problems
  • 3.2 Supervise scheduled maintenance of staging equipment and accessories
  • 3.3 Maintain communication with key production personnel at all times
  • 3.4 Supervise bump out of staging elements
  • 3.5 Involve relevant personnel in evaluation of staging operations and modify procedures as required
  • 3.6 Contribute to evaluation of productions and implement recommendations aimed at improving overall effectiveness of staging operations
