Description
This unit describes skills and knowledge required to plan and supervise staging operations for productions in the live performance and events industries. It involves completing the planning process for specialist staging operations and managing the complete specialist staging operation.The unit applies to those who display a high level of initiative, judgement and responsibility as they manage the operation of a wide range of staging equipment and effects, including high risk work associated with flying people and objects during performances.The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging, rigging, scaffolding work and operating elevating work platforms. Completion of the following units is required for certification and where applicable, at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels:CPCCLDG3001 Licence to perform doggingCPCCLRG3001 Licence to perform rigging basic levelCPCCLRG3002 Licence to perform rigging intermediate levelCPCCLRG4001 Licence to perform rigging advanced levelCPCCLSF2001 Licence to erect, alter and dismantle scaffolding basic levelTLILIC0005 Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more).Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering a construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (Commonwealth of Australia, 2007).Achievement of the unit ‘CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry’ fulfils this requirement.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan specialist staging operations
  • 1.1 Evaluate initial staging concepts and technical requirements in relation to feasibility, safety and environmental impact
  • 1.2 Provide applicable advice on the feasibility and safety of concepts and their implementation and suggestions for workable alternatives as required
  • 1.3 Document details of safety and technical requirements for specialist staging concepts
  • 1.4 Reach agreement on specialist staging concepts and final requirements in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.5 Develop contingency plans as required
  • 1.6 Develop and document work plans for setting up, testing and operating specialist staging elements
2. Manage pre-show specialist staging operations
  • 2.1 Confirm equipment and accessories are available and in safe working order
  • 2.2 Organise staging personnel in line with industry award guidelines, including the services of licensed riggers as required
  • 2.3 Contract services of flying effects companies as required, confirming adequate time is allowed for installation, training and rehearsals with flying systems
  • 2.4 Collaborate with required personnel on required set modifications
  • 2.5 Monitor progress of pre-show staging operations against work plans and implement contingency plans as required
  • 2.6 Supervise staging aspects of technical and dress rehearsals and modify procedures as required
  • 2.7 Develop and maintain production documentation as required
3. Manage show and post-show specialist staging operations
  • 3.1 Monitor staging operations during performances and resolve problems as required
  • 3.2 Supervise scheduled maintenance of staging equipment and accessories
  • 3.3 Supervise bump out of staging elements
  • 3.4 Involve required personnel in evaluation of staging operations and modify procedures as required
  • 3.5 Contribute to evaluation of productions and implement recommendations
