Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to conduct routine operation and safety checks of fixed/moveable load shifting equipment within the limits of manufacturers' recommended procedures.It covers safe working loads, picking up loads, shifting and placing loads and activities where knowledge of codes and signals is not required.Where the selection and use of tools is required unit MEM18001 Use hand tools and unit MEM18002 Use power tools/hand held operations, should also be selected as appropriate.Depending on the equipment being used a high risk work licence may be required and users should check with the relevant authorities.Band: AUnit Weight: 4

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Determine job requirements
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • 1.4 Identify job requirements from job sheets or work instructions
2 Conduct routine operation and safety checks of load shifting equipment
  • 2.1 Interpret operational principles of fixed/moveable load shifting equipment
  • 2.2 Undertake routine pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers' specifications and regulatory safety requirements
  • 2.3 Report non-compliance with specifications according to SOPs
3 Pick up loads
  • 3.1 Select appropriate load shifting device for the load and shifting requirements
  • 3.2 Operate load shifting device within design specifications and safe working load
  • 3.3 Lift/roll load, ensuring balance, vision of operation, safety of personnel and protection of load
4 Shift and place loads
  • 4.1 Move load at an appropriate and safe speed using a safe and efficient path
  • 4.2 Monitor path of movement for obstacles and hazards during shifting process
  • 4.3 Lower loads at an appropriate and safe rate
  • 4.4 Place loads to ensure stability, protection of material and avoidance of hazards on site
