Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to apply initial response First Aid in Coal and Metalliferous mining.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for initial response First Aid
- 1.1 Access, interpret and apply First Aid documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
- 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
- 1.5 Identify, establish and maintain communication systems with other personnel during the emergency
- 1.6 Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to, during and on completion of the work activity
- 1.7 Review first aid resources and record, report and replenish shortages
2. Assess the situation
- 2.1 Identify risks and hazards
- 2.2 Minimise immediate risk and implement control measures
- 2.3 Assess casualty's vital signs and physical condition
3. Apply First Aid
- 3.1 Provide First Aid management
- 3.2 Reassure casualty in a caring and calm manner and make them comfortable
- 3.3 Identify, obtain and apply use of First Aid resources and equipment appropriate to the identified risks and hazard controls
- 3.4 Communicate with emergency control personnel the need for First Aid/medical assistance
- 3.5 Monitor and respond to casualty's condition
- 3.6 Finalise management of casualty
4. Record and report incident
- 4.1 Record details of casualty's physical condition, changes in conditions, management and response to management
- 4.2 Convey details of casualty's condition and management activities to emergency services/relieving personnel
- 4.3 Prepare and submit written incident reports
- 4.4 Record and report use of first aid resources
