Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out general lathe operations on non-CNC lathes using a three and four jaw chuck. The unit applies to individuals who work under supervision in the sugar milling industry.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for lathe operations
- 1.1 Identify machining requirements according to job specifications
- 1.2 Select, fit and use personal protective equipment according to health and safety procedures
- 1.3 Collect and prepare materials to be machined
- 1.4 Set up lathe and tooling for machining operation according to workplace procedures and manufacturer’s guidelines
- 1.5 Conduct pre-operational equipment checks according to operating procedures
- 1.6 Identify and report health and safety hazards and maintenance requirements according to health and safety procedures
2. Operate lathe to achieve specifications
- 2.1 Set machining parameters to meet job requirements
- 2.2 Position materials for lathe operation according to operating procedures
- 2.3 Start, operate and shut down the lathe according to operating procedures
- 2.4 Check work for conformance to job specifications
- 2.5 Identify non-conforming components, and correct as required
- 2.6 Undertake basic routine operational maintenance according operating procedures
- 2.7 Ensure the work area is maintained to meet work cleaning standards
