State Implementation and Classification
Description
To provide industry with an employee who has a broad
knowledge of the basic skills associated with the
indentured trades of Mechanical Fitting and
Machining; Automotive Mechanical; Plant Mechanic;
and Metal Fabrication/Welding and has a sound
flexible educational base to meet present and future
needs.
To encourage students to undertake additional courses of study directed towards
attaining the highest possible level of craft skill and improve their skills
related to both job-seeking and job- keeping.
To provide the student with technical training
equivalent to Stage 1A of the TAFE segment of
apprenticeship course in Automotive Mechanic, Plant
Mechanic, Fitting and Machining and Metal
Fabrication.

2 STRUCTURE
The above structure is to enable replacements for
students gaining employment to be effected mid-
year.
Students may be offered higher levels of mathematics and communication
depending on their entry levels.
3 WORK EXPERIENCE
Where possible students are encouraged to
supplement the course attendence with work
experience in industry, of up to 7.5 hours per
week or equivalent time in block release during
vacations.
4 ACCREDITATION
On successful completion of the technical training
section of this course, the student will be
credited with Subject 1A of the Automotive
Mechanic, Fitting and Machining, Plant Mechanic
and Metal Fabrication Apprenticeship course.
5 CERTIFICATE OF PRE-VOCATIONAL STUDIES
To be eligible for the award of Certificate of
Pre-Vocational Studies, the student must reach a
pass standard in all subjects of the course.
6 NEW APPRENTICE TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT SCHEME (NATAS)
Each student studying the trade-related 1A
subjects will need to have a NATAS Assessment Form
completed for each trade subject.
