This qualification reflects the role of individuals who are developing a broad range of technical and conceptual design skills and who take responsibility for own outputs in work and learning. Practice at this level is underpinned by the application of introductory design theory and history.

Total number of units = twelve (12)
- seven (7) core units plus
- five (5) elective units of which:
- to (2) units must be selected from the electives listed below
- three (3) units may be selected from the remaining listed electives or any currently endorsed training package qualification or accredited course at Certificate II, III or IV level.

Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid vocational outcome.
