Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret design specifications for textile products and use patternmaking principles to develop and test patterns to confirm specifications. Textile products may include apparel or non-wearable items.This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with pre-determined designs and established procedures. They use discretion, judgement and problem solving to test and alter patterns.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine pattern requirements
  • 1.1 Identify textile product features and scope of pattern requirements from design specifications
  • 1.2 Identify fabric performance characteristics that may affect completed pattern
  • 1.3 Plan pattern development process based on scope of requirements
  • 1.4 Select and prepare required tools and equipment based on specifications and in accordance with work health and safety requirements
2. Develop and test patterns
  • 2.1 Use patternmaking principles to create pattern pieces
  • 2.2 Identify and action opportunities to minimise waste in the patternmaking process
  • 2.3 Check and confirm shape and accuracy of each pattern piece against design specification
  • 2.4 Label all pattern pieces with required information to support production
  • 2.5 Analyse available toile or prototype, refer back to pattern and check pattern accuracy, shape size and style features against design specification
  • 2.6 Alter pattern to reflect outcomes of testing
3. Complete documentation
  • 3.1 Document any alterations to first patterns in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Complete supporting pattern specification sheets in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Process and store documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
