Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain and repair properties and structures in situations that don’t require the specialist skills of another trade.All work is carried out to comply with workplace procedures, work health and safety legislation and codes, manufacturer’s specifications and sustainability practices This unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision and exercise limited autonomy with some accountability for their own work. They undertake defined activities and work in a structured context.No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify and confirm maintenance requirements
- 1.1 Confirm work instructions with supervisor
- 1.2 Identify hazards and report to supervisor
- 1.3 Select and fit appropriate personal protective equipment
- 1.4 Inspect structures and facilities to locate and evaluate defects, deterioration and impending defects
- 1.5 Check property infrastructure and resources for correct operation, minor maintenance needs and damage
- 1.6 Confirm maintenance plan
2. Select and prepare tools, equipment and materials
- 2.1 Select and check tools, equipment and materials for serviceability
- 2.2 Identify and segregate for repair or replacement faulty or unsafe tools
- 2.3 Identify, assess and report existing and potential hazards to health and safety
- 2.4 Select and fit personal protective equipment
3. Carry out routine maintenance
- 3.1 Carry out routine maintenance to infrastructure, structures and facilities
- 3.2 Carry out minor repairs to building cladding and paint
4. Complete maintenance activities
- 4.1 Clean, maintain and store worksite, tools and materials
- 4.2 Collect, treat and dispose of or recycle unwanted materials and waste from maintenance activities
