This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select, install or upgrade basic commercial software applications.It applies to individuals who require basic information and communications technology (ICT) skills to undertake related tasks under supervision.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine software or software upgrade requirements
- 1.1 Document client requirements and report to appropriate person
- 1.2 Act on instructions to meet client requirements, according to organisational requirements
2. Obtain software or software upgrade
- 2.1 Investigate and select a software application program that best conforms to requirements and organisational policies
- 2.2 Obtain application program under instruction from appropriate person
- 2.3 Determine licensing requirements and record, according to organisational guidelines
- 2.4 Ensure target computer conforms to the minimum hardware and operating system requirements of the application program
3. Install or upgrade software
- 3.1 Install new or upgraded software application program according to appropriate person or organisational instructions
- 3.2 Complete the installation process efficiently and effectively to minimise disruption
- 3.3 Carry out testing and acceptance, according to organisational guidelines, paying particular attention to possible effect on other systems
- 3.4 Ensure client requirements are satisfied
- 3.5 Refer outstanding client issues to appropriate person as necessary
