Description

This qualification reflects the role of a new entrant into the telecommunications industry who can apply a range of competencies in a varied work context from installation to operation of telecommunications equipment and products.

The qualification has a generic outcome if no specialisation has been undertaken. When a specialisation has been selected then the qualification has one of the following outcomes.

Cabling
This specialisation reflects the role of an operator for the installation of telecommunications equipment, data cabling and cabling products on customer premises.

Networking
This specialisation reflects the role of an operator for a limited range of digital reception equipment for either a customer or an enterprise. They would perform limited fault finding on a range of digital reception equipment for both cable TV and free to air TV reception.

Radio Communications
This specialisation reflects the role of an operator for the installation and maintenance of telecommunications radio communications equipment installed in base stations. It prepares an individual for entry to the industry in a general area of installation of telecommunication radio communications equipment and connection of wireless base stations.

Rigging
This specialisation reflects the role of an operator for the installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment installed on structures requiring rigging skills. It prepares an individual for entry to the industry in a specialised area of installation of telecommunication equipment on high structures including radio towers or for installation and connection of wireless base stations.

Licensing/Regulatory Information
Work functions in the occupational areas where this qualification may be used are subject to regulatory requirements. Refer to the ICT Implementation Guide Companion Volume or the relevant regulator for details of licensing, legislative or certification requirements.

Cabling at the customer premises must be carried out according to requirements of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and relevant industry registration bodies, and in line with the specifications of the access network owner.
Refer to "Pathways to ACMA Cabling Provider Rules - Cabling registration" and the mandatory industry practical hours required for registration.

Dogging and rigging are classified under the National Standards for licensing persons performing high risk work. Age restrictions apply to eligibility for licencing. Please refer to the relevant federal and state legislation to ensure compliance with the regulations.

Packaging Rules
Total number of units = fifteen (15)
- six (6) core units plus
- nine (9) elective units

The elective units consist of:
- up to nine (9) may be from any group of elective units listed below
- up to two (2) units from elsewhere in this Training Package, or another currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course at AQF Level 2 or 3.

Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the integrity of the Australian Quality Framework (AQF) alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

Units selected from other Training Packages or accredited courses must not duplicate units selected from, or available within, the ICT Information and Communications Technology Training Package.

Refer to the Specialisations information below, and to the Companion Volume Implementation Guide, for advice about choosing electives to support specialisations in particular sectors of the information and communications industry.

Specialisations:

Cabling
(Note: See licencing information in the ICT Companion Volume Implementation Guide regarding ACMA registration)
Select at least six (6) electives from Group B Cabling.

Networking
Select at least four (4) electives from Group C Networking.

Radio Communications
Select the following three (3) elective units:

- ICTRFN201 Install a satellite antenna
- ICTRFN202 Install a terrestrial antenna
- ICTRFN304 Construct and test a radio communications device
- plus at least one (1) more from Group A Radio communications and rigging.

Rigging
(Note: This specialisation is not suitable for delivery in a school as a Vocational Education and Training (VET) program. See information in the ICT Companion Volume Implementation Guide regarding licencing for dogging and rigging.)

Select the following four (4) elective units from Group A Radio communications and rigging:

- ICTTCR202 Use operational safety in a telecommunications rigging environment
- ICTTCR203 Use safe rigging practices to climb and perform rescues on telecommunications network structures
- CPCCLDG3001A Licence to perform dogging
- CPCCLRG3001A Licence to perform rigging basic level*.
