This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to determine the appropriate handling methods and storage of commercial fluids and gases greater than the quantities required by individuals to do their own jobs and applies to all containers used to store bulk fluids/gases. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Where the storage and handling of dangerous goods is a component of the application of this unit, users should check for relevant regulations and legislation with the appropriate authorities.Band: AUnit Weight: 4

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Determine job requirements
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • 1.4 Identify job requirements from specifications, job sheets or work instructions
2 Determine handling methods
  • 2.1 Determine type of material from labels, colour codes, signage
  • 2.2 Interpret and identify all relevant material properties or clarify with appropriately qualified and authorised authority
  • 2.3 Interpret and implement all relevant safety and emergency procedures, as required
  • 2.4 Interpret and observe all relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice
  • 2.5 Undertake correct and appropriate handling methods
3 Store bulk fluids/gases
  • 3.1 Determine correct storage conditions from instructions/manufacturers' specifications/directions
  • 3.2 Check containers for safe and clean use
  • 3.3 Fill/empty containers in accordance with procedures, regulations/legislative requirements
  • 3.4 Handle containers and move in accordance with site procedures, regulations/legislative requirements
  • 3.5 Label containers in a correct manner and store according to site procedures, regulations/legislative requirements
