Description
This course is intended to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to perform the tasks associated with control centre operations such as:
- optimising performance of a complex control system within the organisation
- using knowledge of the organisation’s value chain to improve quality outcomes
- optimising automated operations as a controller in a specialist area
- maintaining continuity of operational control through effective briefings and handovers
- using a range of communication technology to communicate remotely with team members or other stakeholders
- managing situational awareness and other factors that affect personal performance to reduce the likelihood and severity of errors
- making informed decisions in known or predictable situations and undertaking dynamic decision making in complex, high consequence situations
- controlling automation safety risks
- influencing quality outcomes through collaborative work practices and informal leadership of colleagues.
Core units developed for the course are not industry-specific, to enable the qualification to be used by any industry where control of automated operations, plant or equipment is undertaken by controllers operating from a control centre. The packaging rules for the selection of electives enable three of the four electives to be industry-specific units selected from any Training Package or accredited course which may be combined with the core units to provide context to suit any industry. For the mining industry, specialist industry units of competency in the electives list were developed for the course to address the need for units of competency relating to automated mining-specific operations, fixed and mobile plant and equipment that were not available through existing units of competency.

Course Structure:
Total number of units to achieve the qualification = thirteen (13)
- nine (9) core units plus
- four (4) elective units, of which:
- at least one (1) unit must be selected from those listed, and
- the remaining electives may be selected from those listed, or from any other currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course, provided they do not duplicate the outcome of core units or other electives chosen.
Where units selected from other Training Packages or accredited courses have prerequisites, the requirements of the host Training Package must be met.
The choice of electives must maintain the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid, industry or enterprise-supported vocational outcome.
