Description
This course prepares the student to work as an assistant nurse in the acute care environment.
North and South Metropolitan TAFEs delivers in a simulated hospital environment.
The duration is 1 semester with a 2 - 3 week full time clinical placement in an acute care hospital or high acuity residential aged care facility. The students works under the direction of a registered nurse and provides basic nursing care including; assisting with showering, grooming, oral care and tasks such as measurement of temperature, pulse, respiration, blood sugar level and urinalysis. Documentation of the measurements are a requirement.

Packaging Rules
Total number of units = fifteen (15)
- Seven (7) core units
- Eight (8) elective units, consisting of:
- at least six (6) units from the electives listed below,
- up to two (2) units from any endorsed Training Package or accredited course - these units must be relevant to the work outcome.
All electives chosen must contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.
Any combination of electives that meets the rules above can be selected for the award of the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance. Where appropriate, electives may be packaged to provide a qualification with a specialisation.
Packaging for each specialisation:
- All Group A electives must be selected for award of the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (Operating theatre technician)
- All Group B electives must be selected for award of the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (Assisting in nursing work in acute care). To achieve this qualification with this specialisation, the candidate must have completed at least eighty (80) hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the unit of competency.
